Kenyans Pay Fines by Mobile Phone to Reduce Graft
In yet another example of countries using technological advancement to battle bribery and corruption, Kenyans are now able to pay traffic fines via a phone-based money transfer service.
The new system wipes out the previous method which required almost without exception that a bribe be paid before the fine payment could be processed.
This comes on the back of the ipaidabribe website that is enjoying early success in Kenya, exposing the frequency and location of bribe requests throughout the public service.
With Kenya long being viewed as lacking the political will to address it’s corruption problems, these small steps will at the very least increase awareness – an excellent first step.
